Targeted Fat Removal

What is Liposuction?//

Liposuction uses high-pressure suction to remove fat from undesired areas and thick deposits on the body, most commonly in the form of: hip contouring, buttocks contouring, lower leg contouring, Tummy Tuck, thigh contouring, back lifts, upper arm contouring, chin contouring, or neck contouring. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, as the amount of fat that can be safely removed and the ability of the skin to shrink down are limited, especially after previous skin expansion with pregnancy and significant weight fluctuations.

Several supplemental techniques are available for specific situations.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a powered cannula to assist with breaking up the fat and increasing its removal.

Laser-assisted liposuction, Smartlipo®, introduced in 2007, uses an Nd:YAG laser, which is passed through the subcutaneous plane to create energy to lyse fat cells and improve fat removal and contraction of the overlying skin.

The Art of Body Sculpting

What are the benefits of Liposuction? //

Liposuction offers a range of benefits for individuals seeking body contouring and fat removal. Some of the key advantages include:

  • Enhanced body shape: Liposuction can sculpt and redefine your body's contours, helping you achieve a more balanced and proportionate figure.
  • Targeted fat removal: This procedure allows for precise fat removal in specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, such as love handles, thighs, or abdomen.
  • Permanent fat reduction: The fat cells removed during liposuction do not typically regenerate, providing long-lasting results.
  • Minimally invasive: Modern liposuction techniques are minimally invasive, leading to quicker recovery times and less scarring.
  • Customized treatment: Liposuction can be tailored to your specific needs and goals, ensuring a personalized approach to body contouring.
  • Complements other procedures: Liposuction is often incorporated into other procedures such as a tummy tuck and offers an excellent method of fine-tuning your results.

Before the procedure, you'll have a consultation to discuss your goals, ensuring your expectations are aligned with the potential outcomes of liposuction. Patients often notice visible improvements shortly after the procedure, with ongoing progress as swelling subsides.

Understanding the Procedure

Your Liposuction Procedure //

Most liposuction can be safely performed in an approved outpatient surgical facility. Small liposuctions can be done with local anesthesia and mild sedation. In order to ensure a safe environment and a good result, the procedure should be done by physicians and facilities trained in plastic surgery and, even more specifically, in liposuction procedures. The operation time can vary from one to five hours depending on the volume aspirated and the number of body sites and positions addressed.

As with all cosmetic procedures, patient expectations must be reasonable, and patients must understand that the goal of liposuction is restoring a more desirable shape and contour to the body, not removing all fat below the skin. In all liposuction techniques, small incisions are made near the area to be suctioned in a crease or covered area. Each area is usually suctioned from multiple directions in a cross-tunneling technique with metal cannulas to obtain a smooth result.

In “dry” liposuction, no fluid is added, and volumes are limited due to blood loss.

During “wet” liposuction, “super wet” liposuction, and “tumescent” liposuction, one of many various formulas of crystalloid, local anesthetic, and vasoconstrictive agents is added prior to liposuction, reducing damage to lymphatic and circulatory vessels, which reduces bruising, swelling, and blood loss and allows for a greater volume of fat removal.

The facility and type of anesthesia used will vary depending on surgeon preference and the volume of fat to be removed. In addition, the local anesthetic may make anesthesia or heavy sedation unnecessary, and the fluids provide necessary resuscitation. Some patients have enough excess fat that treatment requires multiple sessions in order to maximize safety. Ideally, this is determined before surgery, but on occasion, an unplanned second procedure is necessary. Monitoring, safety precautions, and overnight observation may be necessary as larger fluid shifts affect blood pressure, heart rate, and kidney function.

Recovery After Liposuction //

The wetting solution limits post-operative pain for up to a day, but even then, most patients only suffer moderate discomfort that diminishes over the first week. There is always some bloody drainage from the incisions.

Typically, our Mobile and Fairhope liposuction patients return to work and casual activities in a week. After liposuction, avoiding strenuous activity and compression are important to limit swelling and prevent fluid collection. Bruising and swelling are significant for several weeks but are limited with form-fitted garments that also help the skin re-contour without dimples or creases. Swelling needs to resolve before the true results can be appreciated.

Post Surgery Scar Treatment

A common concern among those pursuing plastic surgery is the appearance of post-surgical scarring. It is important to note that many elements of scarring are genetic, and there are some people predisposed to forming widened or thickened scars. However, there are known interventions that if followed can significantly reduce the size and visibility of the post-surgical scar.

By choosing PR Plastic Surgery for your procedure, you have already taken the first step by choosing board-certified plastic surgeons who are meticulous in their technique and wound closure. Thankfully, our patients also have the resources of the PR MedSpa and the expertise of our aestheticians to ensure the most favorable surgical outcomes.

For optimal scar treatment and healing, both Drs. Park and Rebowe, and our aestheticians highly recommend two therapies available through our MedSpa. Once cleared by your surgeon, our MedSpa staff will assist you in transitioning to these therapies.

  1. Silagen Silicone Treatment
  2. Laser Scar Therapy

Silagen Silicone Treatment

Works as a protective barrier that seals in hydration and limits excess collagen production, the root cause of abnormal and raised scars. This treatment is offered in the form of either silicone scar cream or silicone sheeting. The silicone cream will have additional benefits to scar reduction, including moisturizer and sunscreen. The cream dries to form a medical-grade silicone barrier that is flexible and lightweight. The silicone sheets have the additional benefit of added pressure to the scar. We recommend that the silicone cream be applied twice daily, and the silicone sheets are worn daily for up to 24 hours. Silagen Silicone Treatment is usually recommended for a minimum of 2-4 weeks following suture removal, or per physician recommendation. Some patients may utilize Silagen silicone up to one year post surgery for optimal results.

The Laser Scar Therapy

Consists of two powerful devices that can reduce scars and scar tissue, the Vbeam Perfecta and the Erbium laser.

The Vbeam Perfecta Laser reduces the appearance of scars by decreasing the erythematous, or red pigment. Inflamed scar tissue has more active blood cells than normal skin and the wavelength of this device targets the red pigment specifically, reducing the inflammation and therefore scarring. Clinical studies show that 100% of scars treated with Vbeam Perfecta Laser show visible improvement.

After the Vbeam, we use the Erbium Laser to blend the transition to native skin and compliment the results. By heating the subcutaneous tissue, the laser stimulates the production of new collagen, resulting in tightened and rejuvenated skin around the scar. Not only will the scar itself fade and diminish, but the edges of the scar will more effectively blend into the surrounding skin. Laser scar therapy has proven to speed up the recovery process post-surgery.

Your surgeon and our aestheticians at the PR MedSpa will assist you in choosing the correct post-surgery scar treatment pathway for you following your surgery.

Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions //

Liposuction is not a weight loss method. It is a body contouring procedure designed to remove localized fat deposits. Liposuction is most effective for individuals who are near their ideal weight but have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Many of the serious life-threatening complications discussed in the media have occurred in the hands of poorly trained or equipped doctors, and risks can be limited by choosing a properly trained and certified plastic surgeon and facility. However, even under these circumstances, there are potential complications such as dehydration, infection, bleeding, contour irregularities, fat recurrence, fat emboli, and deep venous thrombosis/pulmonary emboli, which require treatment.
